Iconic Eyeliner with Celebrity Makeup Artist Michael Ashton

Welcome to the first episode of Makeup With Friends! In this episode, celebrity makeup artist Michael Ashton (known for his iconic eyeliner on celebs like Adele) shared that he loves the Continuum gel eyeliner for the modern texture and finish. Learn to create an iconic eyeliner look with step-by-step guidance from Michael Ashton himself.

Step 1: Skin Prep

Before diving into the makeup application, Michael emphasizes the importance of proper skin preparation. He recommends starting with Super Cell Deep Moisture Cream, a hydrating moisturizer that creates a smooth canvas for makeup. Michael suggests working the moisturizer into the skin, starting from the center of the face and moving outward. This technique ensures that the complexion products blend seamlessly. Additionally, he advises hydrating the lips before applying concealer to prevent any slipperiness.

Step 2: Brows

Brows play a significant role in framing the face, and Michael believes in giving them proper attention. He opts for MAKE's Clear Brow Gel to define and shape the brows naturally. Michael's technique involves working the product into the brows, brushing the inner ones upward, and tucking down the outer corners. This provides a foundation for the brow product to adhere to. He suggests focusing on filling in the underneath and top corner of the brows to create structure, while leaving the overall look natural and not overly drawn-on.

Step 3: Complexion

Moving on to the complexion, Michael aims for a natural finish. He recommends using a lightweight, buildable foundation such as MAKE's Diffusion Dew Skin Tint. Apply a small amount of foundation to the center of the face and blending it outward to allow for targeted coverage where needed and a sheer effect towards the edges. For brightening the under-eye area, Michael suggests using a creamy, hydrating concealer like MAKE’s Skin Mimetic Concealer. He applies concealer in a triangular shape under the eyes, extending towards the temples, and blends it with fingertips for a seamless result. Setting the foundation and concealer with a finely milled translucent powder like the Diffusion Set Translucent Pressed Powder to help control shine without appearing heavy.

Step 4: The Eyeliner

Now it's time to create the iconic eyeliner look with Michael's guidance. He recommends using a gel or cream eyeliner and a thin, angled brush for precise application. Starting from the upper lash line, Michael uses the Continuum Gel Eyeliner and draws a thin line, keeping it as close to the lashes as possible. To achieve a subtle wing, he extends the line slightly past the outer corner of the eye. For a clean and sharp wing, Michael utilizes a small piece of tape as a guide, placing it at an angle from the outer corner towards the end of the brow. Connecting the line to the wing completes the desired look. For added drama, smudge a black eyeshadow or eyeliner pencil along the lower lash line, creating a smoky effect. Finish off the eyes with a few coats of mascara to provide definition to the lashes.

Step 5: Lips and Finishing Touches

Completing the overall look, let's focus on the lips. Michael suggests starting by lining the lips with a matching lip liner to achieve a precise shape. Using a lip brush, he applies Cream Supreme, ensuring full coverage across the entire lip area. Blotting with a tissue and reapplying the lipstick helps create a long-lasting color. To add a touch of natural flush and warmth to the complexion, Michael lightly dusts a peachy blush onto the apples of the cheeks.
